Geffen Named In "You're So Vain"
The decades long mystery of who exactly Carly Simon is referencing in her 1972 hit song "You're So Vain" has finally been put to rest.
British tabloid The Sun claims that the tune is directed at none other than record company executive David Geffen.
The answer lies in the remastered version of the classic song that is featured on Simon's latest album Never Been Gone. When played backwards, a voice whispers a single name: "David."
Then the head of Simon's label, Geffen was thought to be then paying much more attention to singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell.
If Geffen is the true muse behind the song, then Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Warren Beatty, Mick Jagger and Kris Kristofferson, who were all formerly romantically involved with Simon, can breathe a sigh of relief.
