Genesis Excuses Gabriel from Rock Hall Induction
Peter Gabriel is getting a pass from his former bandmates in Genesis, after revealing that he would not attend the band's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this month.
Gabriel is ready to hit the road to support his latest album, Scratch My Back, and opted out of the induction ceremony as it conflicts with orchestra rehearsals.
""(Gabriel) rang up and said, 'Look, everyone's going to say I'm trying to snub you and all the rest of it,' " Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks said in an interview with Billboard.com. "I said, 'Well, just tell them we didn't want you to come, so we're snubbing you!'
"No...I mean, it's a fair enough thing. It would've been lovely if he could've come, but I understand his problem," Banks continued.
Mike Rutherford, the group's guitarist/bassist, echoed the sentiment, saying that Gabriel was "very keen" on the induction. Rutherford went on to say that he thought the "Sledgehammer" singer had "a very legitimate excuse. I know he would (come) if he could, but it's just the wrong timing."
While Gabriel's absence prevents any hope of the band reuniting to play at the ceremony, Rutherford is still happy to receive the honor.
"I think at my age, any accolade is enjoyed," said Rutherford, who will celebrate his 60th birthday this October. "It's nice to be inducted into something."
