Gabriel's Covers Project Compromised
Peter Gabriel's album project Scratch My Back, in which he covers songs from other artists in hopes that they'll return the favor, is encountering some roadblocks.
Some artists, such as David Bowie and the Arcade Fire, have declined the offer to record their own takes on Gabriel's songs.
Gabriel covered Bowie's song "Heroes" for his side of the project, but the Thin White Duke bowed out, leaving "Heroes" co-writer Brian Eno to record something instead.
The former Genesis frontman contacted various artists for the project, and ended up creating orchestral interpretations of songs by Paul Simon, Neil Young, Randy Newman, David Bowie, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and others.
Now however, the project may have to shift gears due to the participation gap.
"We may not get everybody, but I hope we will," Gabriel said in a New York Times interview.
Paul Simon is among the artists who have already covered Gabriel's work. His cover of Gabriel's "Biko" is currently available as a digital download. Gabriel intends to release more covers in pairs each month.
